Is That Spanish For Cheese?

Ever since I crossed the border leaving Texas I've been craving Mexican food. My former roommates will attest to the fact that no boundaries exist when completing my hunger-related missions. [I'm still bitter that the Waco McDonald's nine times out of ten would be out of ice cream. And I'm sorry to the night shift employees if I didn't take the news very well.]

Back to the craving at hand. I've been searching everywhere for chips and queso--which used to be a staple in my diet. Sometimes having only one serving of c&q per day wouldn't satisfy my appetite. And when chips became meaningless I switched to tortillas and queso. And maybe added some salsa to the mix. Those were the days.

So last night at Trader Joe's I scoured the aisles and couldn't find any jarred queso--the faker looking the better to me. Hmm, that was weird, I thought. While looking puzzled an employee asked if he could help me find something that I was looking for. [I don't think he knew what he had gotten himself into at the moment.]

Me: "Yes, what aisle is queso?"
Employee: "Ques......what? Did you say q-u-e-s-o?" [Thinking I'm crazy]
Me: "Yes, queso, exactly!" [Smiling enthusiastically thinking it's aisle four]
Employee: "Is that Spanish for cheese?" [Lady, please leave]
Me: "Yes." [Smile fades]
Employee: "No." [No more questions lady!]

He also informed me that this "queso" mixture I spoke of is not readily available anywhere. How could he say that to me?!

I can't. I can't write anymore about queso not being a staple around these parts. It's too difficult.

  1. Michele: Get one of those big blocks of velveeta cheese (or sorta cheese :), plus some cream cheese, plus some salsa, plus some taco seasoning---melt by microwave or stove. I guess you'll need vats of that stuff! =) Good luck!
