A few weeks back Ryan's parents invited us to join them on their trip to Las Vegas. With it being just a hop, skip, and a four hour drive from LA, we took them up on their generous offer.

We spent the day walking in and out of all the casinos and eating everything in sight. Las Vegas is not short on good food.

What's For A Snack?

Saturdays are my lazy day. After a week filled with cooking, cleaning, and rushing to get out the door, I usually do absolutely nothing. So when it comes to meals I like to keep it simple.

I came across this recipe and made it this afternoon for a late snack. It's definitely going to be added to my permanent list of recipes to cook!

It's simple - dice some onions, brussel sprouts, and garlic. Toss these three items in a sauté pan with pepper and paprika. Meanwhile, toast some bread, add cheddar on top, bake for a few minutes, and top with the onion/brussel sprout/garlic mixture. Delicious and easy!

From the West Coast to the Gulf Coast

We are officially heading back to Texas!

The past year we've spent in Los Angeles has been one we'll never forget. This is where we were able to be in a short-distance relationship for the first time in four years, where we both got real jobs, and where we noticed how lonely a big city can be without family or friends around.

After thinking, re-thinking, and thinking about it again, we both decided that this isn't the place for us. We do know that Texas is right for us. We miss our families, our friends, and Tex-Mex!

In even more exciting news, Ryan will be pursuing his passion - something he's wanted to do for years and finally found the right way to do it.

Working For The Weekend

We ended this whirlwind work week with a nice, relaxing weekend. Friday we started off celebrating some new exciting news:

Saturday, we headed to Larchmont Village, a cute block lined with small boutiques, sandwich shops, and pastry stores in the neighborhood.

Our neighbor, Scott, came along while I practiced taking some ~~not very good~~ outdoor photos.

Sunday, we enjoyed the extra hour (or two!) of sleep and the chilly Fall day with some semi-homemade brownies.

When my mom and her Dutch friend visited last week I was presented with the perfect excuse to whip up a batch of this heavenly dish. I went to my gal Ina once again for this spoon-scrapingly good recipe.

He looks terrified of me. This small, four pound (on a good day) chihuahua thinks that he's stuck with me for forever and won't come near me. He'll follow me at a distance, peek out at me from corners, and then scurry onto his bed when I come within a few feet of him.

Fall Inspiration

Do you ever try and re-vamp your look?

I'm the type of person that typically gets bored once a year and feels like I need a few new pieces to help spruce up my wardrobe. Here are a few pieces I zeroed in on this season and haven't been able to take off (spoken almost figuratively):

Riding boots are a must! They last for years and it fulfills my dream of pretending to own a horse and participate in the equestrian arena. Weird, but fashionable!

Jeans don't have to be expensive to be cute! I found these very dark skinnies for a fraction of its retail price. They have a solid pocket on the back and are very dark denim in person.

These zip-up gems first made their debut last fall. When I saw them on an ultra chic friend I thought they would be too pricey to indulge in. Not so! These trendy leggings are perfect for long tunics and riding boots and are only $10!

The last item, a Christmas present from last year, is one item that I can't seem to stop wearing. I've gone about five days this year without wearing it. This season won't be any different.

Closet Reorganization

I finally did it. I cleaned my closet. Dust, creaky hangers, and unpolished shoes had been staring at me for months.

Not anymore.

I dedicated five hours on Saturday and sifted through my closet cleaning it, organizing each item according to sleeve length and occasion - insert crazy thoughts about me right now - and now I'm at peace. While I still don't have any of these, it's a step in the right direction.

I don't think that curving pole is going to last much longer.

The past few meals

The past few nights I've been sticking to the weekly prepared menu. Usually, I opt out one night of cooking, declaring that leftovers are indeed still okay to eat two days past their original debut.

However, this week I was determined to not cut any corners. So we've been enjoying a variety of different fares - albeit at 10 pm after too much work and traffic - nightly.

My fave gal Ina had something to do with this one.

Chicken Enchiladas were a first for me in terms of dicing, chopping and preparing. I haven't been able to stop ~~gaining weight~~ eating them since.

No recipe needed for this crowd favorite. Simply dice a few veggies, combine with ground turkey meat (I forewent the eggs just in case salmonella decided to make a presence in this dish) . . .

. . . wait and wait and wait . . .

. . . and you've got yourself some homemade meatballs and a good ol' time.

Time Away

Well, after a few weeks of wondering if I'm ever going to update this thing again, I'm sure you expect a few good excuses to account for my absence.

Here's a few reasons why opening up the ol' laptop may have been a tad too strenuous recently.

1. A quick trip to Pismo Beach

We found that the LA smog finally breaks just north of Malibu.

We drove through Santa Barbara and passed a few vineyards on the way.

. . . And stumbled upon this pretty lil lake.

We picked out a place to possibly spend Thanksgiving weekend.

Met up with these two for a day of eating and reminiscing.

Finally tried some of that clam chowder everyone's been recommending.

The weekend chauffeur stretching his legs.

We made it to the beach and discovered that Northern California completely skips over the summer season and heads straight into Fall directly after Spring.

2. Cooking, Cooking, Cooking

From tomato basil soup . . .

. . . to penne frittata with ricotta and basil . . .

. . . to ribboned asparagus, tagliatelle, and sauteed wild mushrooms . . .

. . . to apple tarts, who knew dinners could be so exhausting?!

Well, there you go. Just two excuses that happen to take up most of my time (one more than the other).

While the heat pales in comparison to the Texas sun, the lack of air conditioning in this cement-laden city is appalling! No, we don't have A/C in our home, something I never thought I would ever even think of saying!

But the excessive heat here hasn't stopped me from testing a few new sizzling soup recipes, this time from Williams-Sonoma Soup. This delightful book has dozens of fresh soup ideas for all four seasons and a slew of different occasions.

So far, we've enjoyed Broccoli-Leek and Garlic Stracciatella (couldn't find the official W-S recipe online).

Monday's Menu

Every Saturday I browse through our (limited) library of cookbooks for new recipes to try throughout the week. Without the correct proper planning we could both head towards dangerous territory. Yes . . . toast could be a dinner option without the menu preparation.

I had a request from the second-in-command for Spaghetti Carbonara from Williams-Sonoma's "The Weeknight Cook." How did it turn out?

Having everything - even salt - in bowls makes you feel like you've got your own Food Network TV crew following you around waiting for your next segment. Fun!

Stir everything together - but not before taking a photo of all the pretty colors.

After stirring in a few eggs (I don't recommend more than 1 1/2) and whipping the pasta together, serve with bread - ahem, toast - and enjoy.

Summer Sandwich

The evenings have been breezy and cool here. But we aren't immune to the Texas heat during the days even in this part of the country! We needed something light and refreshing for our Sunday evening meal and Ina Garten's Tomato, Mozzarella & Pesto Panini didn't disappoint.

This is an easy-to-make, affordable sandwich perfect for any summer day (or evening). The guest of honor even requested it be made at least once more this week.

Tomato, Mozzarella & Pesto Panini (Plus Basil!)

Prep the work station! No distractions allowed!

Peek on the sandwiches and make sure they can handle the heat!

Serve with a beverage in hand and some nice classical musical in the background for optimal enjoyment!

Ingredients:

2 large beefsteak tomatoes (or other large tomatoes)
1 (16 ounce) ball fresh mozzarella cheese
12 slices bakery white bread, sliced 1/2-inch thick
1 cup pesto sauce (homemade or storebought)
1 to taste kosher salt
1 to taste butter, unsalted, room temperature
**I added a few leaves of fresh basil to each sandwich as well

Directions:

Preheat a panini grill machine or a heavy skillet. ** I used a cookie sheet and broiled these sandwiches in the oven for 10 minutes.
Core the tomatoes and slice tomatoes and mozzarella 1/4" thick.
Place the bread slices on a cutting board(or work surface). Spread each slice evenly with pesto. Place a layer of mozzarella(about 2 slices) on half of the bread and cover with a layer of tomato. Sprinkle the tomato with a little kosher salt.
Place the remaining slices of bread, pesto side down, on top. Spread the top and bottom of each sandwich with sotened butter.
Grill the sandwiches in batches on the panini grill for 2-3 minutes, until the mozzarella starts to ooze out. If using a skillet, place a weight on top
Cut the sandwiches in half and serve warm. Enjoy!

Zucchini Pancakes

I bet you thought the lack of food posts meant I had given up on the menu I planned last week. Au contraire! The latest recipe to pass with flying colors was Zucchini Pancakes from Ina.

The troops declared this unusual recipe a monumental success.

Ingredients

2 medium zucchini (about 3/4 pound)
2 tablespoons grated red onion
2 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten
6 to 8 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Unsalted butter and vegetable oil

Directions

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.
Grate the zucchini into a bowl using the large grating side of a box grater. Immediately stir in the onion and eggs. Stir in 6 tablespoons of the flour, the baking powder, salt, and pepper. (If the batter gets too thin from the liquid in the zucchini, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of flour.)

Heat a large (10 to 12-inch) saute pan over medium heat and melt 1/2 tablespoon butter and 1/2 tablespoon oil together in the pan. When the butter is hot but not smoking, lower the heat to medium-low and drop heaping soup spoons of batter into the pan. Cook the pancakes about 2 minutes on each side, until browned. Place the pancakes on a sheet pan and keep warm in the oven. Wipe out the pan with a dry paper towel, add more butter and oil to the pan, and continue to fry the pancakes until all the batter is used. The pancakes can stay warm in the oven for up to 30 minutes. Serve hot.

Day two of a lifetime of meals and I'm still in it to win it. Tonight, my girl Ina from "Barefoot Contessa At Home" leant a gracious hand.

She helped me whip up a savory meal that incited seconds even after the chef had closed her doors.

Thanks girl!

Surprisingly filling

Look who managed to sneak in tonight's meal. Mmmhhhmmm.

Pesto Pea Salad - for those who don't even like peas . . .

Ingredients:

1 (10-ounce) package of frozen peas, defrosted
2 tablespoons pignolis (pine nuts)
1/4 pound baby spinach leaves
1/2 cup prepared pesto
1 teaspoon kosher salt

Directions
Cook the peas in a pot of boiling salted water for 1 minute. Immediately immerse the peas in a bowl of ice cold water, and drain when fully cooled.

To assemble, place the spinach leaves in a salad bowl. Sprinkle the peas and pignolis over the spinach. Add the pesto and toss.

Note: To toast pignolis, place them in a dry saute pan and cook over medium heat for about 4 minutes, until evenly browned, tossing frequently.

The First Meal

I've never been one to enjoy cleaning. And with LA's black dust, 1920's era bathrooms that never seem to become shiny, and no signs of a dishwasher in sight, things can get a bit hairy here very quickly.

So Ryan typically handles all the work that requires P90X workouts to scrub the tiles clean and make this 90-year-old establishment beam. I get to shell out my orders to the troops in the kitchen.

So, after a few dinners last week consisting of toast and others of cheese and crackers, he politely asked me if I would start providing meals that require more than a few bites to finish.

I obliged.

After hitting the books, taking notes, and testing my skills, I've finally come up with this week's menu to keep us as far from toast as possible.

Day 1:

Simple Tomato Soup
via my rescuing friend, Caro

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 yellow onion, peeled and coarsely chopped
1 or 2 garlic cloves
1 can (28 ounces) whole peeled tomatoes
1 1/2 cups vegetable stock or water

Melt butter in a medium stockpot over medium heat. Cook onion and garlic until soft and translucent (about 5 minutes). Add tomatoes and vegetable stock and simmer for 10 minutes or until tomatoes begin to fall apart. (I usually start with 1 cup of stock and add the rest after pureeing, because I like the soup to be thicker.) Puree with an immersion blender (or in a blender or food processor).

Costa Rica was a marvelous destination for our honeymoon! It is rich in greenery, the people are friendly, and the beaches are beautiful.

Before we jetted off - first class! - we attended a brunch hosted by Ryan's grandparents & aunt and uncle the morning after the wedding. Everything was lovely and delicious!

Hi friends! I'm back from the wedding festivities and am now a married gal! I'll be changing the look/name of the blog shortly but I couldn't wait to post a few photos in the interim. Let's start where I last left off . . .

Friday evening friends and family went through our rehearsal at Royal Oaks. (my apologies for the limited photos at the moment).

We headed outside for a bit but everyone made it quick due to the heat!

After the rehearsal run-through we all headed to Perry's Steakhouse for a beautiful dinner hosted by my in-laws. I don't have the photos available at the moment but everything was GORGEOUS! The flowers, the table numbers, the menu card, the food, the private champagne, the slideshow, the speeches. It was beyond anything I would/could have ever dreamed of!

I just had to send you a quick update on my new fave blush. Lorac Cosmetics is having a too-good-to-be-true blush sale right now. I'm a firm believer that too much blush is never enough.

So when I saw their famed cheek stamp on sale for a mere $5 - gasp! - I couldn't resist. I opted for the Hibiscus hue. It's simply wonderful. Probably my fave blush color. Ever!

Give it a try - the cheek stamp is a few dollars, conveniently portable, and is quick and easy to apply!

Weekend To-Do

This weekend was a busy one! Within the past 48 hours we:

1. Attended our second marriage counseling session with our minister. Discussed our "Ten Commandments For Marriage." Very interesting to see what we each had to say as underlying rules/guidelines for our life together. So far, so good!

2. Put our wedding invitations in the hands of the USPS. I can see wrinkles forming on me in real time hoping they actually arrive to every intended guest. It wouldn't be the first time! (More on Los Angeles local government at a different time).

3. Purchased guest book - Aunt Diann told me the simpler the better!

4. Received table number holders and monogrammed cocktail napkins for the reception.

5. Picked up part of the the bridesmaid gifts - tres adorable!

6. Decided on a new honeymoon locale. Mexico is just too dangerous so we're headed to Costa Rica now! I hear Costa Rica has volcanoes so I'm so excited about that, ha!

I'm rarely inspired to clean up around these parts but when I do it's THE BIG LEAGUES. So at the top of my list, after washing dishes for 45 minutes this evening - no, I don't own a dishwasher - was to clean all of my beauty products.

I've been waiting for weeks to do my laundry, the floors are a bit grimy, and the tops of every piece of wood furniture I own is a tad dusty. But priorities were definitely realigned to make way for cleaning all of my makeup brushes and compacts.

There's not a speck of dust on those products.

These brushes are so clean it actually feels like you're conditioning your skin when using them.

Bridal Shower

Last weekend my longtime friend Molly and her beautiful mom, Julie, hosted a bridal shower for me. To put it quite simply, it was lovely. The flowers were gorgeous, the food was delicious, the venue was perfect.

And the people that came were wonderful.

I was fortunate to spend time with my best friends and look forward to my future with Ryan. Here's a small peek into the shower.

Valentine's Celebration!

Ryan and I got to spend Valentine's Day together for the first time in four years! We kicked off the weekend by exchanging small gifts.

Ryan was so thoughtful and bought champagne flutes for us to use at our wedding. We couldn't wait all the way until May to use them though!

Next up Ryan took me to a surprise dinner to BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood. We dined on Chilean Sea Bass, goat cheese baklava and truffled mac n' cheese. It was beyond fabulous.

A Formal Affair

After my friend, Courtney, posted an article about her wedding china today, I felt inspired to chime in as well!

I've always been a fan of formal dining. Growing up, formal china wasn't a big deal but eating at nice restaurants and attending dinner parties were. So over the years I've come to love love love formal dining pieces.

Originally, I had something much girlier picked out for our wedding china. But once Ryan got into everything the flowers and ribbons went out the window when it came to deciding which china pattern to choose.

Below is our wedding china we picked out at Bering's, with the insightful help of my mom.

I'd never thought about mixing different sets of patterns before. But after I found three different lines I just couldn't live without, it became clear that the only solution would be to combine them.

So now that Ryan and I are officially going on a honeymoon it's time to start planning wardrobe choices! Resortwear, taken both figuratively and literally, is my favorite category of clothing. First step is scouring the sale racks of J.Crew for new swimsuits!

An Official Honeymoon!

It didn't take much thought to decide upon a honeymoon destination. I've never done the obligatory Mexican resort route and Ryan's fave vacay is Cabo. So we decided to combine the best of both worlds and go with an all-inclusive resort in one of the most beautiful places in Mexico.

Ryan and I got to book our honeymoon flights today! We'll be flying first class to Cabo San Lucas two days after our wedding. We'll get to enjoy five nights at a resort and enjoy being newlyweds! None of this would be possible without the generous support of my 'Ma & Pa.' (Yes, ever since reading Little House On The Prarie I've called my parents Ma & Pa). Thank you, thank you, thank you, Ma & Pa! We hope to take you on a celebratory trip together one day as a thank you for providing a honeymoon for us!!!!

This week . . . I've eaten my weight in m&m's. I also discovered that putting m&m's together like so spells my intials.

This week . . . I realized that I'll be getting married in four months. There are still so many things to get done. What length tablecloths? China or gold dinner charger? Who will make the ceremony programs? What will the bridal and bridesmaid's flowers be wrapped in? Should we do assigned seating? What am I going to do with my hair? And the list goes on. And I had to take a deep breath to calm down.

This week . . . I started to get very excited about the thought of going on a honeymoon! It'll be the first of many exciting trips that Ryan and me will take together as a married couple!

This week . . . I decided that since I love stationery so much I'm going to start making some of my own (and using this site as one of my inspirations)!

Another Exploratory Weekend

Ryan and I like to play a little game called "Who Can Spend the Least Amount of Money?!" So far I'm winning (my hunger tolerance is much higher than Ryan's).

So this weekend we continued on our quest to not spend any frivolous money by going for a free hike. This hike is obviously built for the crazy people that think walking at a 45 degree angle is fun. About half-way in I checked my heart rate and it felt like I'd already burned 400 calories on the elliptical.

I'm fatigued just typing that.

But the view at the top was worth it! While LA is smoggy, only rains once every 97 days, and is outrageously expensive in all aspects of life, getting to hike through a mountain is a treat! It reminds me of the days when my family used to hike the Avila in Caracas on the weekends when I was younger.

Free Weekend

I'm always on the prowl for a good deal! This past weekend I did two things to help me save money while still having some fun: applied for a library card and visited the LA museum district.

The library was lots of fun! My mom used to take my sister and me to the library all the time when we were younger because we were required to read books every week (her rules, not mine!)

The world famous Tar Pits are just a few short miles from the apartment so what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than to visit a steaming pool of tar?!

Next, it was on to the piece of the Berlin Wall that sits across the street from the lovely pits.

And next to it was the world famous light sculpture.

Other than 'Silvery Moon' given to me by my Aunt Diann, I am absolutely terrified of matte lipstick . . .

. . . that is until I discovered NARS Matte Velvet Lip Pencil. It's the perfect matte shade that isn't too scary to add to any look. My favorite color is 'Sex Machine.'

Why does NARS have to give their products embarassing names?!

Another fave of mine is 'Roman Holiday.' It's a frosty pink that adds a little bit of color to any look.

New Year's Celebration

Ryan and I are spending the evening eating appetizers, sipping mimosas, and thinking about how blessed we've been this past year. So much has happened within the past twelve months that I still can't believe it sometimes.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Ryan and I have always wanted to learn how to play the piano. It's something I wished I had learned to do growing up but was always too preoccupied with sports to devote my time towards.

This Christmas our dream came true! We are now the proud owners of a digital, weighted keys keyboard!

Yes, we are on our way to performing a recital in the near future. Stay tuned!

Plus, since my parents are moving to Holland I'm hoping that maybe if I can learn how to play the piano then maybe they'll hand over their baby grand . . .

Top 5 Reasons I Loved 2009

1. Graduated from college! All of those nights that I stressed I would somehow fail out of school or get too sick to finish never came true - phew.

2. I got engaged!!!!! Wow. I couldn't believe it when Ryan asked if I would give him the honor of marrying him.

3. After 38378979 hours in the car and two nights in New Mexico and Arizona I made it to Los Angeles in one piece.

4. Someone decided to hire me and therefore prevented me from slipping into a post-grad depression. Thank you!

5. All of the fun that I've had in wedding planning will finally pay off on May 29, 2010. I can't wait to finally be Mrs. Key!

Another Slammed Door

Is it just me or have some people become less considerate? Today I was hobbling into the post office with two large bags and a box wedged between my ribs and elbow. Clearly I was struggling.

A guy fifteen steps in front of me walked towards the door, took one look at me, opened the door for himself and let it slam behind him!

My mouth dropped open in shock. Umm, could he be anymore rude? Yes! He saw me walking down the secluded hallway limping with the boxes spilling out of my arms and looked away.

A Texas Christmas

Ryan and I flew back to good ol' Texas for the holidays. We had a fabulous time spending Christmas with our families and laughing and eating too much.

Ryan decided to be a little risky and smoke a cigar.

We ended the night with fireside stories and laughter!

Before we left we managed to sneak a few hours of shopping into the trip. Phew!

And before leaving I said a tearful goodbye to my beloved friend, Trey.

Rash Gone Wild

Do you ever have those days where you just want to hide your face under the covers? I had three of those days this week.

What seemed like an innocent itch soon turned into a full-fledged rash on my face! The worst about having a rash on your face, not being able to cover it up, and feeling like Quasimodo is having to go to work.

One of my co-workers asked if I was okay when she saw me on Monday morning with the rash. Needless to say I tried to not draw any attention to myself for the next several days and avoided eye contact as much as possible.

Halloween Party

One of my favorite things to do is throw small parties. My roommates and I became quite good at it in school, if I do say so myself. I really could have used them here this past Saturday to help decide the menu and rearrange some furniture as we often used to do.

However, Ryan was the perfect host by decorating the apartment with spider webs and creating some "Halloween punch." It was loads of fun!

Night Cap

My Aunt Mimi

The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Most people are some in form or another affected by this terrible disease--whether it be a friend, sister, mom, aunt, grandma, or even themselves. My company recently pledged to raise $5,000 for the Susan G. Komen foundation in honor of it being BCA month and I'm excited to be participating in this special event.

Two lovely women in my own family passed away fighting the disease. While I never met my grandmother because she was gone before I was born, I was able to spend 15 wonderful years with my beloved Aunt Mimi.

Mimi was a force to be reckoned with. She was an intelligent, poised woman who knew exactly what she wanted. She was a world-traveler, a successful attorney, supporter of Houston arts, a gourmet cook, and so much more. However, it wasn't uncommon for her to simply say to whomever was nearest at family holidays, "Get me some more Diet Coke, and don't forget the ice." I don't think anyone ever thought to not get her a Diet Coke.

My favorite memories of Mimi date back to early childhood. Mimi was a big supporter of the Houston Opera and Ballet and would take me and my sister to 'The Nutcracker Ballet' every Christmas. We would get a packet of Junior Mints to enjoy during the show and marveled at the way the dancers twirled and glided across the stage.

One time, Mimi guffawed at me when I was ten years old because of the way I walked. She told me that she spent good money going to spa's learning how to stand and walk correctly. I vaguely remember her putting a book atop her head and having me mimick the way she walked.

However, one of the best and last memories I have of Mimi was when she was lying in her hospital bed surrounded by her family. She wasn't able to speak anymore but could slowly scribble on a piece of paper with the help of a nurse. We were holding up a sheet of paper to understand what it was that she wanted and something that looked like a young child's first attempts at writing were slowly written down. No one could understand what she had written. I squinted a few times at the sheet of paper and realized exactly what is was that she was asking for. Mimi had written, just a few days before leaving us, "I would kill for a Diet Coke right now."

She passed away before Christmas almost seven years ago. She wasn't there to demand someone grab a Diet Coke for her--and I think the whole family missed that.

More than anything, I wish she got the chance to meet Ryan. She would have loved him. Mimi passed up a four year scholarship at Rice University to study at Barnard in New York City for a year. Since my grandparents had eight children and couldn't afford to continue her private school education in New York she had to return home to Houston. Her love of big cities and new cultures never left her soul. She and Ryan would have been good friends.

I wish she was here to help me plan my wedding. She had the most sophisticated and refined taste. I remember her telling my newly engaged cousin at the time, "Every wedding invitation should only be a cream or ivory card stock invitation with black engraving on it."

I miss her so much sometimes. I think about her often. Sometimes, I even dream about her. My sister and I used to ride around in the trunk of her green station wagon Mercedes when we were little and thought it was the most fun thing in the world. We would look out the back window and think how cool it was that we got to travel around facing the back of the road.

I know I'll see her in heaven one day but I wish she was wish us now.

In honor of Mimi and all of the other fabulous women affected by this disease, I hope you'll support Breast Cancer Awareness Month by doing something special this month.

Halloween Is - A - Coming

You don't have to tell me twice that it's the holidays - or fall. I can't get enough of this beautiful crisp weather and wonderful time of the year. Last wekend we (mostly me) created Halloween pretzels, chocolate cookies with homemade peanut butter icing, and enjoyed the cool weather.

DIY Stationery

The Most Hateful of Days

Sorry about the extended hiatus! Last week wasn't the best of weeks - not to mention Time Warner took SIX days to fix the internet around here. I have seen better Monday's than the the one I experienced last week. Take a look at what happened:

1. Woke up with itchy, sore spider bite.
2. Forgot lunch at home.
3. Itched spider bite.
4. Got home from work at 8 pm.
5. Found out the internet and cable were gone. And wouldn't come back until Saturday!
6. Spider bite started to hurt. A lot.
7. Went to emergency center.
8. Found out spider bite wasn't spider bite.
9. Learned that staph infection is "running rampant" around LA (hey, it was the doctor's words, not mine!)
10. Cried. Asked nurse if they were going to amputate my leg.
11. Nurse laughed at me. Ryan too.
12. Got milkshake at in-n-out to cure staph infection.
13. Came home to dirty clothes that had to be done that night.
14. Put clothes in community washing machine at 1:00 am.
15. Discovered clothes sitting in a pool of water in broken washing machine at 1:35 am.
16. Rung out every single piece of clothing. Including sheets and pillowcases.
17. Hung every single piece of wet clothing and sheets around the apartment to dry at 2:15 am.
18. Decided California was playing a sick joke on us.

A Wiseman Once Said . . . Yes, I admitted it - staph infection. But only because there really needs to be a public service announcement to get spider bites checked out before you start scratching it.

Yes, my internet and cable and life support will not return until Saturday.(I've lodged several complaints against them, don't get me started . . .) Pumpkin Picking

We are crazy about the holidays in these parts. So when we spotted a pumpkin patch in Encino this weekend we could hardly contain our excitement. The weather was chilly and the air smelled of the sweet corn being roasted inside the pumpkin gates. It reminded me why I am dying to visit Maine this time of year.

I'll be switching my last name soon and I couldn't be more thrilled. It's almost like I'm creating a new identity for myself. Luckily, Ryan has a fabulous last name so I'm more than honored to soon be called a 'Key.' Fabulous last names happen to run in the family. Case in point: my mother's maiden name was 'Trueheart' before she became a 'Wiseman.' And my paternal great-grandmother's last name was 'Peachey.'

I think that life's small moments should always be celebrated, and what better way to acknowledge a new last name than by receiving a timeless gift?

Sometimes living in LA around so many New Yorkers makes me miss Manhattan. Ryan agrees, there is something - no one can quite describe - that makes NYC magical to those who don't live there. I'm currently missing Grounded, one of the best coffee shops I've ever visited. It's the kind of place where you spot Malcolm Gladwell typing away on his laptop and catch up with a friend over cinnamon cappuccinos.

The Search Is Over

For the past five years, ever since ballerina pink nail polish has become so very chic, I've been on a frantic hunt to secure the.perfect.shade. It's been a testing journey navigating through all the pepto-bismal-pinks to too-pearly-whites.

Many polishes later, I've finally found that understated color that seems to fit perfectly with just about every piece of clothing I own. It's about time.

Before You Head West

Living in Los Angeles is simultaneously exciting and magical. Having the entertainment industry located just a few blocks away and living with year-round resort weather has been wonderful. However--and you knew that was coming--there are some things that most locals don't typically divulge. Here is a list of the top four things you should know before you head west.

1. The California Written Driving Test is impossible. Do most people pass this on the first or second try? Seriously, unless you just graduated from driver's ed you wouldn't know the answer to minutiae such as it not being legal to smoke a cigarette in a car with anyone under the age of 18 present.

2. Everyone claims to be cool and relaxed. But this city is home to the strongest of work horses. Don't even think of complaining about long hours--it's expected around these parts.

3. Ample parking is a term used to describe organized city planning, not Los Angeles. There is no such thing as free parking--or convenient parking for that matter. No wonder people zip around on scooters!

4. California is home to the best coffee in the US--Peet's Coffee. It's a local fave and Starbucks is soooo commercial.

This past weekend Ryan and I wandered on over to Disneyland. We left with toothaches from too much candy, sore feet from walking all day, and so many fun memories. He said it was the "the best birthday present ever." Mission accomplished.

Ryan's birthday was just this past Tuesday and it was painfully difficult picking out what to get him. We've been acting excessively too mature lately--with all the talk about 401(k) accounts, car insurance and saving for school/a house. Ewwwww.

So I thought that taking a day to act completely immature and indulge in some much needed fun would be the best present. Yes, that's right--we're going to Disneyland this Saturday. Stay tuned for absurdly cheesy photos.

Ummm, I should probably know the answer to this question but I'm completely perplexed. I cannot find a decent concealer. All those early mornings are starting to draw out some sleepy eyes--and I need one desperately, as in yesterday. Not one more day can pass before I get my eager hands on a good cover up product.

I'm not just seeking any ol' concealer y'all--I'm in search of the best.one.ever. Any suggestions?

Putting together an outfit for work in the wee hours of the morning is oftentimes more painful than not having my daily cup of Pike Place Roast by 9 am. Life is difficult sometimes. Luckily, one of my favorite bloggers, The Lil Bee, created a friendly iPhone application for life's biggest fashion dilemmas.

Feather--a hybrid of fashion and weather--offers fabulous advice on what to wear, when to wear it, and in what weather. So I can sleep in those extra seven minutes each morning instead of pondering which top to mix with which pair of pants and oh, I forgot about matching those shoes! Phew.

Shu Uemura should be inducted into some kind of makeup hall of fame. His super famous eyelash curler has been a staple in the beauty world for quite some time. But it was only this past weekend that I finally added it to my own collection. Just one press and I was hooked. After applying a few top coats of mascara I saw the magic settle in. Yes, it does have a price premium compared to most other curlers--but price shouldn't ever compromise feeling fabulous.

Fashion Week just wrapped up a few days ago and the makeup trends for spring have been set in place. While it's going to be trendy to be sporting peachy pouts, my own makeup routine rarely strays from having soft pink lips. Just this past weekend I picked up NARS lip gloss in Turkish Delight and couldn't be more, well, delighted.

I think of myself as a foodie--you know, one of those people that loveslovesloves to go out to eat, talk about food, buy cookbooks, pay $4 for an overpriced cupcake and indulge in anything and everything that is presented. But the menu I have stored in my mind is slowly dwindling and I haven't made anything for dinner other than pasta and vegetables and sometimes those embarassing frozen pizzas when I'm feeling lethargic--for the past--oh, maybe three weeks.

Yikes.

I grew up in a house where salt was only available to guests and butter was a toy only the devil was allowed to use. So I have no idea how to season food--at all.

So, what do I do? What do I make?

Is That Spanish For Cheese?

Ever since I crossed the border leaving Texas I've been craving Mexican food. My former roommates will attest to the fact that no boundaries exist when completing my hunger-related missions. [I'm still bitter that the Waco McDonald's nine times out of ten would be out of ice cream. And I'm sorry to the night shift employees if I didn't take the news very well.]

Back to the craving at hand. I've been searching everywhere for chips and queso--which used to be a staple in my diet. Sometimes having only one serving of c&q per day wouldn't satisfy my appetite. And when chips became meaningless I switched to tortillas and queso. And maybe added some salsa to the mix. Those were the days.

So last night at Trader Joe's I scoured the aisles and couldn't find any jarred queso--the faker looking the better to me. Hmm, that was weird, I thought. While looking puzzled an employee asked if he could help me find something that I was looking for. [I don't think he knew what he had gotten himself into at the moment.]

Me: "Yes, what aisle is queso?"
Employee: "Ques......what? Did you say q-u-e-s-o?" [Thinking I'm crazy]
Me: "Yes, queso, exactly!" [Smiling enthusiastically thinking it's aisle four]
Employee: "Is that Spanish for cheese?" [Lady, please leave]
Me: "Yes." [Smile fades]
Employee: "No." [No more questions lady!]

He also informed me that this "queso" mixture I spoke of is not readily available anywhere. How could he say that to me?!

I can't. I can't write anymore about queso not being a staple around these parts. It's too difficult.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Saturday was such an enjoyable day. We celebrated our anniversary by doing something we both equally love--eating. First, we had lunch at a small bakery in Larchmont Village. While ordering my fruit tart I thought the dark haired man standing next to me looked oddly familiar. I couldn't help but glance at him and the pretty girl he was with and suddenly realized who it was.....Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr. And then the small swarm of giggly girls huddling together outside the restaurant suddenly made sense to me.

Second, since we had planned to go on a picnic to a secret location, I bought all of the ingredients for the upcoming festivities. However, when I went to turn the stove on I heard a soft simmer with no visible blue flame. Uh-oh. The stove decided he abhorred me just then. So instead we had an "inside picnic" before heading out to Malibu.

I had never been to Malibu and was eager to go since it's on my "places to visit soon" list. The list also includes Buenos Aires and Bora Bora so Malibu really just made the most sense. After driving up the coast for a bit we pulled into a small outdoor market area to peruse the scenery. While cruising through the market I spotted a thin wrist with obscene--yet beautiful--amounts of gold jewelry on it. I was puzzled; that oversized watch and crazy amount of bangles looked oddly similar to what my favorite person on television, Rachel Zoe, wears. Could it be?

And then a small face turned my way and I got a glimpse of exactly who it was. And my only thoughts were, "AAAAYYYYY DIIIEEEEEE." Because out of all the silly celebrities in the world, the one person that I had wanted to see most was standing just a few feet away.

Bananas.

While spotting these famous individuals was fun and a little bit exciting--it's always nice to go home with someone that means more to you than anyone else.

Silly Story

My list of 'to-do's' today included going to the California Highway Patrol office (don't ask) and finding some black patent pumps for my new job. (I'm still grinning over that last bit of information). Anyways, after treking over to the patrol office, I wandered to Marshalls to see what they might have in stock. I was innocently scanning the aisles of shoes, and soon realized that I wouldn't be leaving with anything. This Marshalls was unlike others, (I spotted a few Dolce & Gabbana sandals and Ferragamo drivers).

Anyways, so right when I was about to leave I spotted a pretty brown color out of the corner of my eye. And I slowly approached the target and realized that I had found the perfect brown handbag I had been searching for for months. I inspected it, pulling back the large gold zipper to see what may lay inside. It was roomy, so chic, could pass for a Marc Jacobs bag, and would match everything that I owned. I was already imagining it with this outfit and those shoes. It had to be mine. I couldn't believe I had found the most perfect bag that I would probably use for the rest of my life so quickly.

And then I saw the price tag. This wasn't any ordinary Marshalls like I mentioned before. It was more comparable to a Nordstrom's than a discount store.

And I started running the numbers in my head and realized that it was five weeks-ish worth of gas. Or all of the "weekend money" we have for an entire month. So I naturally started to wonder how bad public transportation could really be--and, do we really need to ever leave the apartment for four weekends in a row?

Just then, Ryan called to check in with me and I casually mentioned the purse. It didn't go over as well as I had planned. After the phone call, I realized that I could no longer spend money the way I was used to again. I would have to stick to the budget we had created--otherwise I would never be able to own a home one day. Seriously, have you seen how crazy the real estate market is here? But then my mind started to wander again and I questioned how bad living in an apartment for the rest of my life could possibly be if it meant that I could enjoy all of the fabulous handbags and accessories I encountered. At that point, I knew I had stooped low.

And a small tear dropped out of my eye. I kid, I'm joking. I didn't cry over a purse. But I was tad heartbroken.

So I left the store sans purse, sans buyer's remorse, and told myself to never go shopping ever again.

Anniversary Picnic

This Saturday me and Ryan are going to celebrate our six year anniversary together. I remember the night that he took me to dinner and asked me to be his girlfriend. I couldn't fall asleep as I lie in bed after he dropped me off at my house out of sheer excitement. In the past we have exchanged objects and presents but this year, as any couple going through a recession will understand, we're giving each other non-material items. I'm picking the menu and he's choosing the location and we're going to have a nice little picnic together. Sounds perfect to me.

While I was heading back to my car and trying my hardest to keep my head down and away from all of the window displays, my evil curse/skill popped up. After strolling over to Larchmont Village on Sunday, I'm determined to conserve the most amount of money possible so I can shop its Farmer's Market next week. While cruising around the little market I spotted homemade hummus, pesticide-free fruits and vegetables, and baked goodies. I didn't get a chance to take the camera out but I pulled some photos off of the web to give you a sneak peek.

And then I spotted this cupcake shop called Crumbs. Oh my, oh my, oh my.

Ryan and I made a trip around the corner to Griffith Park this weekend. I had been looking forward to this adventure all week because it's free and is a great way to spend the day outdoors. [I'm still working on that California tan; I don't look like a local just yet]. We didn't quite make it all the way to the Hollywood sign but that's on the agenda for next weekend. Only next Saturday we're going to run it. All 18,564 miles of it. Kidding, but it's a long trail--we're talking four or five hours long.

Afterward, we chased down the roaming Kogi BBQ truck in West Hollywood to try their pulled pork tacos and beef sliders. I'm sorry Texas but I think I've found a serious contender in the BBQ competition. It was worth the hour-long wait. See for yourself:

Let's look at the facts:

1. I'm living in one of the most expensive areas of the country.
2. Just graduated from college.
3. Cursed with a skill of being able to find something I have to have almost everywhere I go.
4. Going out to eat is kind of a critical component of my day.
5. I need a good excuse for not doing housework.

So, I really really really need a job. Not to mention, I have to get out of this apartment before I eat every desert in sight. The cookie jar looks more like an empty glass object than it does a holder of all things sweet.
